A Home Away from Home
The Ganesh Festival is one of India’s most cherished traditions, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom, prosperity and new beginnings. It is believed that worshipping him removes obstacles and brings good fortune, which is why this festival holds such a special place in the hearts of millions, especially in Maharashtra.
The tradition of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in public began in the late 19th century, popularized by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Maharashtra. He transformed it from a private family ritual into a community festival, to bring people together and inspire unity during India’s freedom movement.
Being from Nagpur Maharashtra, I grew up experiencing its grandeur and now celebrating it in Wiesbaden Germany, feels like carrying a piece of home with me.
On 30 August 2025, through our community ICAW (Indian Cultural Association Wiesbaden), we came together once again to welcome Bappa with devotion and joy. The celebrations included the installation of a Ganesh idol, traditional rituals, devotional songs, dance, music, and of course, delicious prasad. What made it truly special was that not only Indians but also many German friends joined us, embracing the beauty of Indian culture and making the festival an exchange of traditions and friendship.
The most emotional moment came with Ganesh Visarjan, when we bid farewell to Bappa. Even though it is difficult to say goodbye, the chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya”
(“O Lord Ganesha, come again soon next year!”) reminded us that he will return next year, and his blessings will stay with us always.
For us at ICAW, this festival is more than a religious event — it is about unity, cultural pride, and creating a home away from home. It strengthens our bonds, connects us to our roots, and spreads the positive energy of Lord Ganesha across Wiesbaden.
Ganapati Bappa Morya!
